A new IAU orientation programme for young astronomers
will be organized during the IAU General Assembly:
the "Young Astronomers' Consulting Service (YACS)".
It is a clearly identified office in the Congress Center
where Young Astronomers may, by arranged appointments, meet with
more experienced astronomers to seek advice on their CV, thesis, jobs,
etc. during one-to-one discussions.
This facility will be run during all of the GA.
In order to initialize the programme and to arrange the appointments,
the questionary have to be filled in by all participants. The link to the
questionary is in the menu on the left side of this page.
The registration to the Young Astronomers' Consulting Service before the
start of the GA is done in order to facilitate its organization and it
will continue during the all GA.
Scientific Organizing Committee:
O. Engvold (ex-officio, Norway), M. Gerbaldi (chair, France), J.-P. De Greve (Belgium),
E. Guinan (USA), J. Hearnshaw (New Zealand), M. Johnston-Hollitt (Australia),
J. Pasachoff (USA), J. Percy (Canada), I. Ribas (Spain), J. White (USA)
Local Organizing Committee:
M. Dovčiak (chair, Slovak Republic), R. Goosmann (Germany), T. Pecháček (Czech Republic),
I. Stoklasová (Czech Republic)
Arrangement of the one-to-one discussions:
1. The young astronomers can contact the consultants
by e-mail before the GA starts
The information on
consultants is available to all young astronomers
registered to the consulting service so that they can
choose whom they should ask for advice and contact them directly by e-mail.
2. The consultants may contact the young astronomers
by e-mail before the GA starts
Although this possibility seems a little bit weird at first sight, it
can be the easiest way how to find the right person to help the young
astronomer.
The list of pieces of advice sought for by young astronomers is available to the consultants
together with the information on young astronomers. Thus the consultants may contact
young astronomers and offer them their help.
3. The basic arrangement for the meeting between a young
astronomer and a consultant during the GA
To initiate this service the information about the consultants and their consulting hours
will be put on the noticeboard next to the office of the consulting service.
The young astronomers will then be able to sign in for the discussion with
the consultants there. At the time of the consulting hours the young astronomer and
the consultant will meet at the office of the consulting service.
